About Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Chicago dating back to 1882 when civic leader, Potter Palmer, bought land covered by frog ponds on what later became north Lake Shore Drive and built an imposing mansion there. Land values soon skyrocketed, and this "Gold Coast" rapidly became the home of the leaders of the Chicago Four Hundred, the most influential leaders of the day.

Today, the Gold Coast boasts the famed Rush Street and Division Street entertainment district, which houses some of the most popular bars and restaurants, such as Gibsons, Tavern on Rush, Jilly's and the like. The world famous shopping mecca of Michigan Avenue on the Magnificent Mile and Oak Street is a quick walk away. For relaxation, residents head down to Oak Street Beach, another gem of the Gold Coast,

Today, the housing in the Gold Coast consists of lavish mansions, graystones, brownstones and contemporary highrises. Highlights of the neighborhood include the architecturally and historically famous Astor Street, as well as the lavish luxury apartments on Lake Shore Drive that offer both dramatic views of the city and Lake Michigan.
